You avoid discomfort because it touches up your deepest fears.  Your fear of failure, exclusion and uncertainty are just a few of the worries you perceive by going outside of what is comfortable.  Those barriers can be tamed though, eliminated actually.  Listen to how your fears keep you stagnant.
